Tree roots have reached ten months. Not much has changed, but they are still locking.
I guess what has changed, however, is my perception on how they are absorbing energy. I just came back from a trip to the U.S. Mexico border. There is a lot of suffering down there as migrants try to across and are pursued by Border Patrol and the drug cartels.
We went to a shelter on the border where the women make bracelets to earn a bit of money to return to their homes. I bought a bracelet and wrapped it in my hair (see photo). I will always remember her strength.
Now the memory of that woman is wrapped in my dreads, but with that comes many other memories of the sadness down there at the shelters, soup kitchens, Border Patrol, Operation Streamline, and in the remote deserts where migrants dangerously cross. I will bring all these memories into my social work practice. It's as if my tree roots are absorbing the energies of social justice. Crazy? Maybe. But they are definitely reminders to fight the system and never let bigger institutions think for you.
